Dear Betsy,
We’ll always be thankful that you agreed to be Michael’s manager at that awkward time after being a “young sensation” but not having the clout that comes with a big solo career or a principal chair in one of the biggest orchestras. When clarinet recitals were a “hard sell,” it was you who had the bright idea of emphasizing khe Webster Trio. This led to 30 years of rewarding music making with four pianists in the US and Japan.
Even more important than the concerts and recordings was being inspired to make arrangements for the trio, of which 15 are now published by Presser, International, and Schott. Along with five important commissions by our Flute/Clarinet Duos Consortium, we have been able to create a rich repertoire that is now performed world-wide by other trios. We became a trend-setter, and the flute/clarinet/piano trio has burgeoned everywhere. It all began with you, Betsy, and for that we’ll remain forever grateful.
Your 90th birthday is a landmark in a long life well-lived. Take the day to reflect upon the extraordinary impact you have had on so many musicians who have benefitted from your advice and support. We are all immensely fortunate.
Sending our love,
Michael and Leone

First off, I am so relieved that you are well and healthy. You are indomitable at 90. What have you done that we may learn from you? I do think intellectual and artistic engagement are the two most important things one can do for oneself, apart from eating healthily, to extend life. I can never forget how you may well have saved my life at Nags Head when you rescued me from a fierce undertow and brought me in. Do you remember that? Do you also remember when you shielded my eyes from a torture scene in the movie Open City, that we saw together at the Carolina Theater in Chapel Hill. Of, course, I wanted in the worst way to see what was going on. But finally, I became so upset that you took me out of the theater.
So many memories of being at Greenwood on that great swing, you pushing me higher and higher. Oh, for those days to come back.
You are truly a miracle lady among us all. Bless you, Avery
